Valheim Wolf Taming: Capture, Night Wolves and Breeding

Prepare before the chase

   Bring frost protection, current food, repaired equipment and enough stamina to escape a Mountain wolf. Build the trap before looking for a target.

   Use a secure pit or sturdy enclosure with a safe exit for yourself. A wolf that cannot reach you can damage nearby structures.

   Lure the wolf in, get out and break line of sight. Drop raw boar or deer meat within reach; do not use wolf meat or assume every raw meat is accepted.

   Stay close enough to keep the area active without alarming the wolf. Make sure it has eaten and taming has actually begun.

   Keep it fed and undisturbed until it is tame. Normal uninterrupted taming takes about 30 minutes; alert or hungry time does not count as progress.

Why a night wolf disappeared

Starred Mountain wolves are nighttime spawns. Before taming starts, they try to disappear during daytime. The first successful taming progress removes that despawn behavior; simply putting a wolf behind a fence is not enough.

For a starred capture, arrange the food and hiding place before dawn. If the wolf remains alert until morning, you have not secured it merely by trapping it. Once progress begins, continue the tame with food and a nearby player rather than leaving to gather supplies.

Breed and manage the pack

Keep two tame adults fed and within about three meters. Give offspring room and move excess wolves away from the breeding pair if they stop producing cubs. Wolves have a local population cap; filling the same enclosure eventually prevents more breeding.

Tame wolves can follow you, but ordinary portal travel does not carry the pack with you. Plan a route on foot or another suitable transport arrangement rather than assuming the wolf will appear at the destination portal.

Keep a reserve pair safe at home. Following you into a harder biome can expose wolves to enemies well beyond what their star level can survive. An established breeding pair is more useful than losing every wolf on the first expedition.

If the wolf will not eat

Check whether it is still alert, whether the food is accepted and reachable, and whether the pen is too cramped. Cooked food and wolf meat are not the answer. More food cannot fix an alarmed animal.

If progress stops when you leave, return to a safe nearby hiding place. Do not count time spent across the map or asleep as active taming time.
