Step-by-step guide

What to do first

Eat three different foods. For an unfamiliar fight, start with two health foods and one stamina food; for gathering and travel, consider one health and two stamina foods. Magic requires Eitr food. Choose meals you can replace reliably, not just the highest number in a food list.

AshlandsPiquant pie + mashed meatScorching medleyFood preparation table and oven for the pie; level 6 cauldron for the other two.

These combinations favor a larger health cushion. If dodging, mining or climbing is exhausting your stamina, replace one health meal with a stamina meal from your available tier. A difficult-to-replace ingredient is a reason to choose a cheaper meal for routine chores.

Change the mix for magic

In the Mistlands, Seeker aspic and Yggdrasil porridge provide Eitr. In Ashlands, Marinated greens and Sparkling shroomshake are later options. Decide how many Eitr slots your staff use needs, then use the remaining slot for the health or stamina you lack.

Do not confuse refined eitr, a crafting material, with the Eitr bar supplied by food. Carrying refined eitr in your inventory will not let you cast spells.

Refresh before a dangerous trip

Food bonuses decline as their timers run down. Check the food icons before entering a boss arena or setting sail; the maximum values in a recipe table are not a promise that your current bars still have those values. Re-eat when the game allows it and bring replacements.

You cannot stack three copies of the same food. Bukeperries can clear active food effects, but they also leave you sick temporarily. Change a loadout somewhere safe rather than beside an enemy.

After the Bog Witch update, the cauldron is not the only preparation station. Uncooked oven dishes use the Food preparation table; mead bases use the Mead ketill and then the Fermenter. If an old guide sends you to the cauldron for everything, check the station first.

Where feasts fit

Feasts provide multiple servings and long-lasting food effects, making them useful for a group preparing at home. They still occupy a food slot; they are not a free fourth buff. Compare the particular feast with the meals it would replace.

Make a feast at the Food preparation table using the required Bog Witch ingredients, then place it with a Serving tray before eating. Keep ordinary travel food available when you cannot return to the feast; plan for repeated trips, not just one departure.
