Quick answer
Current live-game guidanceWhat to do first
Check fuel first, then weather protection and space for smoke to escape. A roof can stop rain but also trap smoke if it seals the fire into a small box. Keep an open exhaust path above the fire with a raised rain cover, and keep the smoke away from the height where you stand or sleep.
Match the symptom
| Symptom | Check first | Try next |
|---|---|---|
| No fire at all | Fuel supply | Add the correct fuel; a Campfire uses wood. |
| Fire stops in bad weather | Rain or strong wind exposure | Add suitable overhead protection and side cover without sealing the exhaust. |
| Fire cycles on and off indoors | Smoke trapped above the source | Open or enlarge the path above it; check for beams or roof pieces blocking the opening. |
| You take smoke damage | Your standing area intersects the smoke | Leave the cloud and move the exhaust route away from the occupied room. |
| One fire works but several do not | Shared smoke capacity | Give additional sources their own exhaust space or enlarge the common outlet. |
Build a clear path out
- 1
Locate where the smoke rises from the active fire. Do not assume an opening across the room is connected to that path.
- 2
Leave open space above the source. Inspect beams and nearby roof edges that could obstruct smoke even when the gap looks open.
- 3
Provide an upward exit, with the rain cover raised so smoke can escape around it rather than hit a sealed cap.
- 4
Keep beds, work areas and your usual walking route outside the smoke column.
- 5
Observe the fire while staying nearby. Confirm that it remains active and that the room clears instead of judging the design during a brief smoke-free moment.
Use this as an inspection sequence, not a promise that one standard opening works for every room. If the first change does not help, make the exhaust path simpler before adding decorative covers.
Remember the fire under your kitchen
A cauldron can be placed without a working fire, but it needs one to cook. If the cauldron stops working, inspect the fire beneath it before moving every kitchen upgrade.
Smelters, kilns and other smoke-producing structures can also stop when smoke has nowhere to go. Do not pack them into a sealed shed simply because there is no bed inside.
Smoke damage is a warning to leave the affected space, not a problem to solve by adding armor. Make the area safe to stand in before continuing construction.
