Quick answer
What to do first
Choose a storyteller for pacing and difficulty for pressure. Cassandra suits a more structured sequence of threats, Phoebe gives longer quiet stretches that can still end in hard raids, and Randy adds unpredictability. Start with a manageable difficulty, then change one setting when you know what feels wrong.
Choose for your situation
| Your preference | Starting choice | Why | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Learn systems with some warning | Cassandra at a manageable difficulty | More regular pressure helps you notice preparedness gaps. | Do not raise difficulty just because one raid was easy. |
| Build for longer between threats | Phoebe with moderate threat scale | Longer quiet periods give more uninterrupted building time. | A long break is not a promise of a gentle next raid. |
| Want less predictable stories | Randy | Timing and combinations can be less regular. | Unpredictable is not the same as always hardest. |
| Like the pacing, dislike losses | Keep storyteller; adjust difficulty | Separates how events arrive from their intensity. | Custom settings can affect more than threat scale. |
Choose your preferred pressure
Start with the kind of experience you want, not a ranking of storyteller personalities. If losing a colony while learning is frustrating, choose a lower preset and a reload policy you are comfortable with. Difficulty is a preference, not a qualification test.
Compare pacing and difficulty
When reviewing a bad run, name the problem precisely. Too little happening is different from one raid being overwhelming. The first points toward pacing; the second may call for lower threat scale or better preparation. A storyteller swap will not repair a food chain or an exposed base.
Tune one setting at a time
Use custom settings only when you know which part you want to change. Read the descriptions of individual options rather than assuming a single percentage controls the entire challenge. Record the old choice and change one factor so the result is understandable.
When to change your choice
Revisit the choice when a colony’s needs change. Phoebe can give enough downtime for wealth to outgrow readiness; Randy can produce awkward event combinations. If raids grow without an obvious setting change, compare your colony’s wealth and population before concluding the storyteller is broken.
