Quick answer
What to do first
Read the lowest-mood pawn’s Needs tab and fix the largest avoidable recurring penalties first. Give them real access to food, sleep and recreation. Preventing a break is different from ending one: an active mental break may stop normal orders, and arrest or force brings its own risks.
Match your symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Check | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repeated low mood | The same need is not being met | Read the mood list and watch a full routine. | Fix the specific recurring cause, not just the schedule label. |
| Recreation time but no relief | Access or variety is inadequate | Check available recreation, allowed area and what the pawn does. | Provide accessible options and enough time to use them. |
| A break is already active | Ordinary control is interrupted | Read the break type and immediate danger. | Protect nearby pawns and remove hazards; do not assume a routine order will stop it. |
| Only one pawn is distressed | Individual or DLC needs differ | Inspect traits, health, ideology and role requirements. | Solve that pawn’s need instead of imposing a colony-wide rule. |
Read the lowest pawn’s needs
Mood is a collection of conditions, not a single happiness switch. Start with penalties you can change now: hunger, exhaustion, pain, surroundings or missing recreation. Fixing one acute problem may buy time, but repeated breaks usually call for changing the routine that recreates it.
Fix the recurring penalty
A schedule only grants an opportunity. The pawn still needs a reachable bed, suitable food and recreation that they can use. After editing a schedule, watch whether the pawn actually satisfies the need. A work assignment or restrictive area can undermine an otherwise sensible timetable.
Handle an active break safely
During a break, choose a response based on what the pawn is doing. Move vulnerable colonists away from a violent situation and avoid escalating force merely to save time. Arrest can interrupt some situations but may fail or create a prisoner and relationship consequences; it is not a harmless reset button.
DLC needs are not universal
Royalty titles, Ideology beliefs and Biotech-related needs can add specific requirements. Read those entries on the affected pawn instead of treating them as universal Core rules. For a child struggling with learning time, use the dedicated learning guide rather than an adult-only routine.
