What to do first
Use soil when suitable land and the growing season already meet your needs. Hydroponics can help when land or season is the constraint, but demands reliable power, appropriate light and supported crops. Higher fertility is not a universal yield multiplier or a reason to replace all fields.

Choose by land, season and power
Ask what is limiting food: land, time, power or labor. Hydroponics helps particular constraints, not every one. If the actual bottleneck is cooking or hauling, replacing the fields adds infrastructure without repairing the food chain.
Check basin requirements
Basins require power and adequate light; an ordinary room lamp is not a substitute for a sun lamp’s plant-growing role. Read the selected crop’s requirements. Corn, haygrass and devilstrand are not standard basin crops, so a field plan cannot simply be copied into hydroponics.
Protect crops during outages
An indoor soil greenhouse and powered basins are different investments. Soil still needs acceptable temperatures and light, but does not impose the same basin power dependency. Keep a food reserve for blackouts instead of counting on perfect continuous output.
When a ship changes the decision
Odyssey makes portability relevant. Plan a ship’s growing area as part of its power and space budget, not as a direct copy of a ground farm. Confirm your food can bridge travel and outages before treating on-board growing as the only supply.
