Quick answer
What to do first
Separate an immediate food rescue from the next harvest. Check usable food, diet restrictions, cooking and hauling before planting more. Use a fast crop when time is short, a longer crop when the season and labor allow it, and keep a reserve for work interruptions.
Match your symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Check | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Food exists but pawns are hungry | Access or diet blocks eating | Inspect food policy, forbidden stacks and allowed areas. | Make suitable food reachable; do not assume a visible stockpile is edible for everyone. |
| Ingredients accumulate but meals do not | Cooking is the bottleneck | Check cook availability, bill, fuel/power and ingredient radius. | Fix the bill or station and assign a capable cook. |
| Harvest arrives too late | Growth time exceeds your buffer | Compare the remaining growing season with crop maturity. | Bridge the gap with safe available food; favor quick harvests when restarting supply. |
| Harvest rots before use | Storage or hauling fails | Inspect storage state and hauling priorities. | Protect the harvest and fix refrigeration before enlarging fields. |
Rescue today’s food supply
Pause expansion when the colony is already hungry. Count what can actually be eaten, including restrictions from food policies, health and any relevant DLC. Animals and additional colonists also change demand. A pile of ingredients behind a forbidden door is not an emergency reserve.
Choose the next crop
Rice gives a quicker first harvest but needs more frequent field work. Corn suits a longer uninterrupted growing period and fewer harvest cycles. Potatoes are less sensitive to poor soil than many alternatives. These are tradeoffs, not one permanent best crop for every map.
Find the production bottleneck
Inspect the whole route from planting to eating: sowing, harvest, hauling, storage, cooking and access. Add capacity where that route is failing. More growing zones will not solve an unavailable cook or meals that decay before anyone eats them.
Plan for the next winter
Before winter, check the map’s growing season and expected interruptions. Keep food that can bridge illness, raids or a failed harvest rather than tuning production to the exact daily minimum. Ideology preferences and Biotech metabolic changes require checking the affected pawn’s actual needs; this guide does not assume a standard diet for every colony.
