What to do first
Read the skill book appropriate to your current level before relevant practice or eligible media, then use TV or a skill-granting VHS while the source is still useful to your character. Books provide learning bonuses rather than instantly supplying the skill levels. If XP stops, check the tape's effect, what the character has already learned and the world's media limits.

Which learning source fits now?

Make reading serve the next job
Choose a book matching the skill you will use and its current level range. A higher-level volume is not automatically better, and reading a book is not the same as performing the action needed for XP.
TV and VHS are opportunities, not a reason to stay in an unsafe building. Secure the area and check the device has power. If the show is unavailable, move on with the survival plan instead of assuming you have permanently ruined the character.
Check why learning stopped
Not every tape grants the skill you want. Confirm the effect first, then check whether the character has already received the relevant learning and whether the current level is beyond the world's media limit.
Server XP multipliers, traits and other learning bonuses change the final gain. Compare the actual skill panel before and after an eligible action; do not use somebody else's level jump as a guarantee. Mechanics practice has its own prerequisites and belongs in the separate vehicle-training guide.
Version notes & limits
The VHS reference labels earlier B42 coverage and describes a configurable media level limit. This guide does not assume an old numerical cap is the default on every current server.
