Quick answer
What to do first
Choose the job you want your character to do, then spend points on benefits you will actually use. A Burglar suits early vehicle access, a Mechanic supports vehicle work, and an Electrician supports electrical tasks. Check the current creation screen's skills, point balance and drawbacks together; an old B41 or early-B42 build can have a different cost now.

Build around your role
| Role | Consider | Check before confirming | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| First solo survivor | A role with immediate utility; manageable drawbacks | Movement, endurance and the food/water burden you can support | Taking several survival penalties just to fund attractive positives. |
| Early vehicle access | Burglar | Its current access benefit and remaining point budget | Assuming hotwiring creates a healthy, fueled vehicle. |
| Vehicle maintenance | Mechanic or vehicle-related knowledge | Starting skills and which maintenance recipes are known | Spending on a role whose tools you do not plan to obtain. |
| Power and repairs | Electrician | Generator knowledge and starting Electrical skills | Assuming every teammate shares one character's knowledge. |
| Co-op specialist | Complement another player's role | Who handles food, vehicles, repairs and risky trips | Making every character depend on the same scarce supplies. |
Read positives and negatives as one package
For a general survivor, consider Fast Learner if skill progression is your priority; it is not a Strength/Fitness shortcut. High Thirst adds a water burden, so avoid funding your build with it when water access is already your main problem. Illiterate prevents reading: do not choose it for a plan that depends on skill books or recipe magazines. Check each trait's current description and point cost before confirming.
Review the final character summary after selecting both occupation and traits. Check that you can afford the combination and that no disadvantage undermines your intended role. Names, costs and starting skills can differ from older screenshots.
Give a multiplayer specialist a backup plan
Specialization can reduce duplicated work, but a group should still carry basic food, water and wound supplies. Agree where tools and manuals are stored and what happens if the specialist is offline.
Once the character exists, use the relevant task guide to see whether knowledge alone is enough. Generator work also needs fuel and safe placement; car access is separate from battery and engine health. Those requirements are not solved by a character build.
Version notes & limits
Occupations and traits were rebalanced during B42, including 42.16. Named roles below are choices, not fixed point-budget recipes; the current creation summary takes precedence over old tier lists.
One occupation-and-trait decision guide. No exhaustive ranking, guaranteed optimal build or advice for mod-added traits.
