Quick answer

What to do first

Check the current month and the crop's planting information before using your seeds. Build 42 crops have seasonal windows, so watering cannot rescue every out-of-season planting. Start a manageable patch near a dependable water supply, inspect its state regularly and keep another food source until the harvest is ready.

Pick a crop you can support

For a small vegetable patch, compare the cabbage, carrot or potato seeds you actually have. Read the seed-packet instructions to learn that crop's growing season; the Growing Your Own magazine is another documented source for these vegetables. Pick an in-season option rather than treating one crop as best all year. Bring seeds, a gardening trowel or shovel, and a suitable water container such as a watering can before preparing the patch.

B42's longer agricultural timescale makes a first farm a supplement to the survival plan. Keep stored food or another reliable source while waiting. Growing more than you can water or use creates another task rather than immediate security.

Inspect before replacing a failed patch

Separate three questions: was the crop planted in a viable window, did it receive appropriate care, and has enough in-game time passed? Repeating the same planting without identifying which failed spends more seed without improving the result.

When illness or another plant state is shown, follow that condition's treatment rather than copying a generic water schedule. Track the crop and world settings when comparing advice with another player; a similar-looking plot in a different season is not the same case.

Version notes & limits

B42 changed planting windows and growth timing; early-B42 spreadsheets can differ from later builds. This guide deliberately does not copy a fixed month-by-month table from an older version.

Season and crop-failure decisions, not an exhaustive crop calendar, unsupported greenhouse design or guaranteed harvest timetable.
