Quick answer

What to do first

Enable Search Mode in the foraging interface and move carefully through a suitable area. Inspect detected items and gather useful finds without becoming overloaded. If nothing appears, check visibility, your character's condition and the type of area; do not assume every item can be found anywhere or that an unidentified berry is safe.

Make the search useful

  1. Enable Search Mode

Normal travel is not deliberate foraging

Check: Foraging interface and active mode

Action: Search a manageable area while remaining alert.

  2. Choose a relevant area

Surroundings affect what you can find

Check: Roadside, woodland or other area shown by the interface

Action: Match your objective to the area rather than searching blindly.

  3. Investigate a detection

An indicator is a lead, not collected loot

Check: Detected item's position and safe access

Action: Approach, inspect, then gather or discard it.

  4. Check food identity

Not every natural item is safe

Check: Identification knowledge and item state

Action: Leave uncertain food uneaten; use a known safe supply.

  5. Stop before overload

Found material can slow the return

Check: Weight, daylight and nearby danger

Action: Take what solves your task and leave low-value excess.

Diagnose an empty search

The Foraging interface provides context about the search. Poor visibility, weather, the time of day, your condition and the area can affect what is available or detectable. Compare those conditions before interpreting a short empty walk as a broken mechanic.

Try a different appropriate area or return under better conditions rather than circling the same ground indefinitely. Keep the search focused on something useful: food you can identify, fire-starting material or supplies for a known recipe.

Knowledge and safety are separate from finding

Detecting an item does not mean you know it is edible. Do not test unknown plants by consuming them. Inspect the item and use relevant identification knowledge; a screenshot of a berry from another run is not a safe substitute.

Foraging should support the food plan, not force you into a risky search while already starving. Store useful material on return and keep ready-to-eat supplies for days when weather, danger or poor results make searching impractical.

Version notes & limits

The Foraging reference explicitly mixes B41 and B42 data. The interaction is documented, but this guide does not treat its old item probabilities, skill thresholds or seasonal loot tables as current constants.

Search Mode and useful-supply decisions, not an exhaustive forage database or fixed spawn-location guide.
