Choose the source your equipment can handle

Scout before committing. A reachable deposit with a short return route may be a better first target than a larger-looking spire deep in a lava lake.

Yes, flametal spires can still sink

The documented post-0.218.21 behavior is a 1% chance per hit to disturb a spire, reduced from the earlier 10%. That is not zero, and it is not a guarantee of a fixed number of safe hits. Advice saying sinking was removed can refer to an earlier Public Test change.

Listen and watch for the disturbance and movement. Leave before your remaining path disappears; do not use an estimated timer as a reason to take one more load. Ore left on a fully submerged deposit is lost.

Basalt bomb platforms are temporary too. A successful jump onto the ore is only half the journey: keep supplies and a clear route for getting back. Direct lava contact is lethal regardless of ordinary fire resistance.

A safer mining sequence

   Repair the black metal pickaxe, refresh food and clear nearby enemies before stepping onto the route.

   Prepare the way back and leave enough carrying capacity to move normally with your planned load.

   Mine only while you can still retreat. Collect the drops and reassess the route instead of committing to clearing the entire spire.

   Return to safe ground and store the ore. Arrange a stone-portal route or other cargo transport under your world's settings.

   Smelt the ore in a Blast furnace with coal, then use the bars for your chosen Ashlands gear or station upgrades.

If the metal cannot be used

Check the item's name. Ancient ore and Ancient metal are remnants of the old unfinished Ashlands material, not substitutes for the current flametal recipe chain.

Check the station too: the Black forge crafts equipment, while the Blast furnace smelts flametal ore. Building another Black forge will not turn raw ore into bars.

Keep some bars for the station upgrades your intended equipment or food needs. Mining a shipment and then spending all of it on one item can leave the next required upgrade out of reach.
