Check food access before food quantity
A valid pen contains animals; it does not create food. Inspect the pen marker and then the actual animals’ diets. Stored food, grazing and access all matter. Do not assume the label on a storage area means every species can eat what is inside it.
Choose feed the animals can eat
Hay is useful for compatible animals, while kibble can cover a wider range of diets when its ingredients and labor are available. Read the species information instead of applying one ration to every creature. Keep stored feed protected from avoidable deterioration.
Prepare winter stock
Winter planning needs a reserve, not just an estimate of today’s consumption. Food demand changes as animals breed, and plant growth can stop before you expect it. Keep the harvest field separate from animals that would graze it before it becomes stored feed.
Keep herd size sustainable
When food runs short, reduce optional herd expansion rather than sacrificing the colony’s entire meal supply by accident. Decide which animals you need to keep and whether the winter reserve can support them. Caravans require their own food and load review when animals travel.
