Quick answer

What to do first

Stop extending the fight when your endurance or combat condition is deteriorating. Separate muscle strain from tiredness and exercise soreness, reduce the load you are carrying, and retreat before weak swings become a surround. Choose a usable melee weapon your character can handle; a longer damage ranking does not solve exhaustion.

Play mode
Singleplayer / Multiplayer
Vanilla / Mods
Vanilla baseline; mods may replace rules
Sandbox / server settings
Muscle strain, zombie behavior and combat settings change how quickly a fight becomes unsafe.

Why did your fighting get worse?

Endurance drops during a long fight
Possible cause
Too much exertion for the situation
Check
Your endurance moodle and carried load
Next action
Disengage while an escape route remains; recover somewhere safe.
Muscle strain appears
Possible cause
Repeated exertion in the affected activity
Check
Separate strain from sleepiness or later exercise soreness
Next action
Reduce that activity and allow recovery; switching weapons is not an instant cure.
Swings feel weak despite a familiar weapon
Possible cause
Pain, fatigue, skill or weapon state
Check
Read moodles and inspect the weapon
Next action
Address the condition instead of trying to finish a growing group.
A weapon behaves differently or breaks
Possible cause
Damaged handle, head or sharpness where applicable
Check
Inspect its parts and available backup
Next action
Retreat to repair or replace it; do not assume one condition number tells the whole story.

Keep a retreat possible

Take a small, controllable encounter rather than accepting every nearby zombie at once. Before committing, look behind you and identify where you can move without passing through another group. If that route disappears, the loot objective should wait.

Rest before another trip if you returned tired or overburdened. The useful comparison is not which weapon has the highest theoretical damage, but whether you can finish this encounter and still get home.

Inspect the character and the weapon separately

A change in performance can come from either. Check the character's moodles, injuries and load before blaming a patch. Then inspect the weapon, including the separate part information where B42 exposes it.

For early melee, favor equipment that is serviceable, replaceable and compatible with your current skills. Save unfamiliar or demanding equipment for a safer opportunity to learn it. Server combat settings and mods may change these trade-offs, so a multiplayer recommendation is not automatically transferable to solo.

Version notes & limits

B42 introduced additional combat conditions and weapon-part behavior. This guide gives retreat and inspection decisions, not damage formulas or old-B41 stamina expectations.

Melee survival decisions only. No firearm aiming tutorial, timing benchmark, universal weapon tier list or promise of strain-free combat.
