Quick answer
What to do first
A subscribed mod is not necessarily enabled for the world or server you are playing. Confirm its supported build, download completion, dependencies and the active profile's enabled list. Compare server and client requirements for multiplayer. Diagnose in a separate test world after backing up; there is no universal load order or permanent compatibility guarantee.
Check your game conditions
- Current Stable
- 42.20.4 Stable
- Play mode
- Singleplayer / Multiplayer
- Vanilla / Mods
- Third-party mod troubleshooting; no universal order or enduring compatibility
- Sandbox / server settings
- Third-party mod versions, dependencies and enabled world/server lists determine behavior.
Which stage is missing?
Subscribed but absent
- Possible cause
- Download incomplete or wrong supported branch
- Check
- Steam download state and author's build support
- Next action
- Finish the download; do not expect a B41-only mod to become B42-compatible.
Installed but not active in this game
- Possible cause
- Wrong world/profile enablement
- Check
- Enabled list for the specific session
- Next action
- Enable it only where supported; preserve an established save first.
Dependency warning
- Possible cause
- Missing required content or incompatible combination
- Check
- Current manager warnings and author requirements
- Next action
- Install/enable only the specified prerequisites; do not guess an ordering fix.
Works solo but not on the server
- Possible cause
- Server configuration differs
- Check
- Server mod IDs, Workshop items and client requirements
- Next action
- Have the owner reconcile the active lists.
Fails only with other mods
- Possible cause
- Conflict or differing versions
- Check
- Separate test profile with the required minimum set
- Next action
- Add groups gradually to identify a reproducible conflict without risking the main world.
Read the mod's current support boundary
Check which build the author supports and whether the mod requires a new world or extra dependencies. A title saying B42 does not prove support for every later minor version. The official mod manager can expose dependency and incompatibility information, but it cannot promise that all author behavior is bug-free.
Follow an author's explicit order constraint when one exists. Do not replace it with an alphabetical or one-size-fits-all list. Different mods can change the same system in incompatible ways that ordering cannot resolve.
Protect the original world while isolating
Back up the world and record the enabled mod set before experimenting. Removing map, item or system content from an established save can have consequences even if it makes the launch error disappear.
Use a separate test profile with only the mod and its required dependencies. If that works, add other content in controlled groups and retain the first reproducible error. Report the build, mod versions and relevant redacted error to the author rather than posting private server files.
Version notes & limits
Mods are third-party content and can change independently of Project Zomboid. Advice checked September 4, 2026 is not a guarantee of future compatibility; the author's current version notes govern that mod.
Third-party mod loading diagnosis only. No recommended modpack, per-mod support guarantee, universal ordering recipe or promise that removing a mod is safe for a save.
