Quick answer
What to do first
In B42, check the Build menu for barricade actions instead of relying only on a B41 right-click guide. Choose the barricade type, read its current material/tool requirements and approach the side of the opening you want to secure. Clear access before placing it, and keep another usable exit.

Barricade checklist
Find the correct action
B42 moved building choices
Check: Open the Build menu and find barricades
Then: Select the type appropriate to your available materials.
Resolve red requirements
Nearby supplies may not satisfy the action
Check: Listed tools, material quantity and accessibility
Then: Bring the needed items within the action's usable reach.
Choose the side
The side you approach affects the barrier
Check: Stand where you intend to build and inspect the placement preview
Then: Do not block the route you need to escape.
Check the opening
An obstruction or wrong target can prevent work
Check: Window/door target and accessible adjacent space
Then: Clear the approach and retry the intended opening.
Plan removal
You may need access later
Check: Appropriate removal action and tools
Then: Keep an alternative way out instead of sealing yourself in.
Start with simple materials
Wooden barricades are a practical early option when you have planks, nails and a suitable hammer. Metal options use a different material and tool set; switching the recipe is not a shortcut around missing requirements.
Read the selected action rather than a screenshot of another recipe. If the option is disabled, distinguish a missing material from the character being on the wrong side or unable to reach the target.
A barricade buys time
It does not turn an unscouted building into a safe base. Check the interior, keep an exit and avoid attracting a large group to an opening simply because it has boards on it.
On a server, building permissions or mods may change which actions appear. Confirm the server's rules before treating a missing option as a vanilla bug. If the same action works in an unmodified setup, investigate that difference rather than replacing the whole world.
Version notes & limits
B42 changed the building interface. This guide treats B41 context-menu instructions as historical and uses current action requirements instead of assuming every barricade recipe has identical tools.
Barricading an opening and diagnosing its menu/placement, not full base construction, roof detection or an invulnerable safehouse.
